#tbt again 🙂

Geoff and I had bought our first home together in Melbourne in 2009 after years of renting in our beloved Kensington. After vowing never to move further out than Footscray, we ended up in a gorgeous, secluded little street in West Footscray. Lately I have been thinking a lot about our house, a house I initially convinced myself I didn’t love and was a purely financial and long term investment decision. Since moving to Toronto, I look back with a lot more love towards it, even though it was draughty and freezing in winter and we were deathly scared of any noises in the first couple of months.

Having our own home meant that I could set up my own little home studio, which I hadn’t previously had much interest in. I had joined a photography group which organised studio shoots on a weekly basis in another photographers home, and I had gained an appreciation for shooting with artificial light. In particular I absolutely loved work by Alfred Cheney Johnston (who shot most of the Zeigfield follies in a very distinctive style in the early 20th Century) and George Hurrell (who shot a lot of the Hollywood starlets in the 1930’s and 1940’s).

I brought myself a continuous fresnel light and started playing around, and most of these shots were with the fresnel and a speedlight for hair highlights (although I never really mastered the hair light and ditched using it because I wasn’t 100% happy with the results).

So here is some of my work from my first year in my home “studio” in 2010
