I have only really been shooting portraits since mid 2013. I had shot a fair bit of promo material for burlesque performers and a few personal projects back in Melbourne prior to that, but hadn’t really focussed on everyday people until I arrived in Toronto.
Around the same time I decided that I needed to put myself in the same position as my clients. It wouldn’t be fair to put them through posing that feels weird when you already are feeling quite vunerable in front of a big camera without feeling it myself.
I am my own worst client too, I hate having my photo taken. In fact I warned my wedding photographer that it was going to be a terrible job for her to take our photos becuase I have the worst gimpy face when I know my photo is being taken. For some reason my brother and I both have a lazy eyelid whenever a flash goes off – super embarrasing.
So each year around my birthday, I make a new set of portraits. Normally I use these in my marketing material, headshot thumbnails for places like LinkedIn etc. But this year I also decided to something a little more creative.
The last 2 years have been a rollercoaster in terms of managing Geoff’s health since he first underwent surgery in February 2014 and then again in December 2014. And knowing that we have more surgery coming up this summer has left me feeling a little fragile at times. I got very overwhelmed by it all earlier this year and I feel like these creatives helped to channel some of how I felt.
So here are my efforts – one thing that remains consistent across the 3 years is that I am always wearing black!
