Mexican Holiday 2014 – San Luis Potosi

Published by Angela on

It seems strange that since we moved to Toronto we have had a massive overseas trip every year. While we lived in Australia we only really took two big holidays, a trip to Thailand in the winter of 2007 and then a campervan driving trip around Tasmania in the winter of 2008. I think this mostly came down to the fact that we either spent Christmas holidays in New Zealand or Canberra every year so most of the travel budget went towards that, and then of course all of our money went towards our mortgage from 2009 until the big move.

In early 2012 we moved from Melbourne to Toronto, I travelled back to New Zealand for my brothers wedding in November 2012 and in March 2013 we went to England, Ireland and Holland for another wedding.

So this year, we went to Mexico for another wedding – Geoff ‘s brother Jon and his wife Argelia. Argelia had studied at university at San Luis Potosi, and it was a central location for both her family, the Lester’s and Jon’s friends. We were super excited to be going, especially after the insanely brutal winter and finally being able to wear summer clothes again, to catch up with family and to enjoy amazing food and culture. We were also really lucky to be able to enjoy

Rehearsal dinner at Hotel Museo Palacio de San Agustin – we did a quick run through of the ceremony in the beautiful chapel and then had dinner in the basement (accessed by a secret doorway), which also houses the Presidential Suite.

I got a little obsessed with the beautiful chandeliers hanging everywhere in the building. These photos are a mixture of Canon 40D with kit lens (18-55mm f4.0-5.6) and Windows Phone. I should have brought a much faster lens, I could have got away with bringing either my 50mm f1.8 or 40mm f2.8 but obviously wasn’t thinking properly 🙁

The view from the terrace across the city. We had a few cloudy days but it was gorgeous weather for the actual wedding day.

So many details in this beautiful place, the bride and groom had their portraits done here too.

Like I said, well obsessed with the chandeliers.

Wedding Day! The bride arrives in a horse drawn carriage! It was a traditional catholic ceremony in an amazing church. I did take some photos inside the church, but as Geoff and I were ring bearers I only had my Windows phone which doesn’t handle low light very well unfortunately.

The reception was held at the hotel we stayed at, with a 10 piece live band (including bassist with a pink Hello Kitty guitar – AMAZING!), and then a mariachi band. We were completely amazed how much Argelia’s family and friends regardless of age knew all the songs and dances. It’s obvious that people embrace and are passionate about keeping their culture alive.

The city, beautiful buildings and so many VW’s (one of my favourite cars apart from the gorgeous Mini).
